There is a lot going on suddenly in the Flourtown/Fort Washington neighborhoods…

The location at 735 Bethlehem Pike in Flourtown has been home to Rusty’s Schooner for years, although perhaps unsuccessfully, as it has changed hands repeatedly.

It looks like it has perhaps reached the end of its life-cycle. The seafood takeout spot has  been closed and cleaned out.

South Ocean, a Japanese/Chinese restaurant is due to open in the Acme Shopping  Center in late October. A conversation with the owner confirmed the space will have a sushi bar and will be BYO.

South Ocean Restaurant - Under Construction in Flourtown

Does anyone pre-judge a restaurant by its signing? What does the appearance of the exterior of this restaurant say to you?

We couldn’t help but wondering why it’s necessary to have the neon lights in the windows and the standard “strip mall” signage. The description of the sushi bar being built created a different visual image. Imagine our surprise when this when up…

Just curious, does it matter to you?

MaGerk’s is due to open September 21st at 582 South Bethlehem Pike, Fort Washington, formerly the Bent Elbow. Owners of this Maryland based Pub were born and raised in the Philadelphia area and return home now to restore this 142 year old landmark into a family friendly restaurant and bar. They will serve variation of the Philly Cheesesteak, along with other pub fare. They have over 30 televisions and 3 bars.

  1. I have to say, the sign at South Ocean is awful; however, so is the sign at Blue Fin (as well as the ambiance). Yet, all of us foodies know how incredible the sushi is there, so you just never know. Hopefully this restaurant will turn out good sushi and we will actually have a restaurant option in Flourtown.

  3. I agree, which is why I had pangs of guilt for having such an immediate harsh reaction toward the sign. This picture does not clearly illustrate the enormous neon lights that will eventually illuminate the windows as well. As with Bluefin, you can not judge a book by its cover, so we will have to wait and see. It would just be so nice, and less expensive, if someone would tell new strip mall restaurant owners that their other options available!

  5. Not a good first impression. Will definitely wait to hear word on the street, sorry, I meant to say from right here, if the food is good. Just a thought, great food can make up for poor service, but great service cannot make up for poor food. IT’S ALWAYS ABOUT THE FOOD!

  7. Love your thought! I definitely agree, however see this week’s Weekly Rant for our full opinion.

Thanks for adding the part about hearing word “from here!” We will definitely keep you posted. As a side note, the interior HARDLY matches the exterior. We are not exactly sure what is going on over there! Hoping it turns out to be something great! Stay tuned…

  9. My friend and I just had lunch at South Ocean today (11/13). Our waiter told us that they opened on Wednesday. The owners did a wonderful job turning the dingy Flourtown Sporting Goods store into a classy looking restaurant. The tables are all dark cherry, the walls are painted sage green on top and covered with beautiful glass tiles below. There’s even a cove ceiling painted a beautiful shade of blue and hung with a crystal chandelier. (The ugly vertical blinds were wide open, fortunately.) As for the food, we shared two of the special rolls: Rainbow Roll (California roll topped with salmon, tuna, and I believe striped bass sashimi) for 10.50, and Flourtown Roll (pan fried yellow tail, tuna, salmon, sprinkled with tobiko and scallions and served on a bed of seasoned seaweed salad) for 12.50. We felt that the prices were a bit high for lunch, but the fish was incredibly fresh ant tasty, the rolls were very nicely seasoned, and the plates were gorgeously presented. We intend to come back with our husbands and work our way through the menu. I only hope the word spreads and they stay open. We need sushi in Flourtown!!

  13. It’s always about the food! And I must say the food was good. I ate there 11/13 with my family and we all enjoyed the food. Service was good, but the atmosphere was little to be desired. We felt it was a little too bright and that the large front window could’ve used decorative beads instead of verticle blinds. The pricing was appropiate. We will go back because once again, It’s all about the food!
