John P. Durante Funeral Procession
You may or may not know that we lost an extraordinary man last week; my father. It was sudden and his public service made his passing all the more difficult because so many people loved him. People say all the time that they think highly of someone, or they really like someone and it is often something people just say. When people spoke of loving my dad, they REALLY meant it. I never actually appreciated it until he was gone and everyone, and I mean everyone wanted to tell us just how much.
This was amazing and yet overwhelming as we are all left still completely exhausted, but needing to return to life. We have not written anything since the day before my dad died and since my mind is completely blank, I figured I would just explain where we’ve been. Food has remained a passion, although on the back burner, as my father’s friends and closest companions are some of the best cooks around. They will be my inspiration in the coming weeks and I am hoping to continue honoring my father by focusing on the people and foods he loved the most. I’ll let everyone else continue the tribute to his service, and they will.
That’s all I’ve got in me for now, but stay tuned……

Someone asked me yesterday what was the most vivid childhood memory I had growing up as John’s sister, besides the obivious things brothers did
like protecting you from bullies or screening potential dates (which was a given having 4 brothers)…oddly My Mind couldn’t think of just one! There are so many more then anyone could remember all at once, it’s just that those childhood memories seem to pale now in comparison to the Many I have gained of John the Loving Devoted Father, Grandfather, Husband, Son, Brother dedicated Respected and overwhelmingly Loved Sheriff and Humanitarian <3 Yes… Life goes on as he would want it…we love him and we will miss him, we have lost someone we love but he will live on in our hearts and all of our many old and new memories which will be treasured and shared forever. <3
Dear Chris:
You don’t know me but I knew your father well. I was a County Detective and he was a Deputy Sheriff, later to become a County Detective himself. We were both very young and kind of grew up together in the business under Chief Moody. We worked many long, hard hours together but his amazing personality, quick wit and warm smile made any job we had easier. He always talked about you and Deanna with love and pride and I know how much he loved Maria. He was a “one in a lifetime” kind of person that I knew and was happy to have worked with. I will always remember him as the wonderful person he was.

A recent and wonderful memory I have of Uncle John Durante, was when he was being inducted into the Police Hall of Fame. My father (already passed) Chief Richard A. Zolko was being inducted also and my family was there to accept the honor on my Dads behalf… Well each person had a chance to speak, our family didn’t ha…ve many words, we were still very overwhelmed with my Dad’s passing. But when it was Johns turn to accept his honor he got up and looked us all in the eye and humbly said the true person to honor here is Chief Richard Zolko…. it was such a comforting and just down right good, humble, honorably thing for John to do. He was there for himself and all the wonderful work he has done, yet he could see our saddness and he had a very special relationship with my father and respected him deeply, and he choose to speak of his feelings for my father and his work for his entire speech.. it was one of the coolest thing I have experienced..
